Reconciling Opposite Attractions in Relationships by Cayenne Kelly

Reconciling Opposites Attract with Like Attracts Like: You may have heard that opposites attract and indeed this often appears to be the case. So how can relationships always be your mirror if opposites attract?

The answer lies in the Law of Polarity that states that "everything is dual, everything has poles; everything has its pair of opposites; opposites are identical in nature, but different in degree". In other words, qualities that appear to be opposites are in fact two extremes of the same quality.

For instance hot and cold may appear to be opposite but are varying degrees of that which we call temperature. The same applies to all human qualities and emotions.

You may find that the quality you see in your partner appears to be the opposite of your own quality, but in fact it is the same quality expressed in a different way. It is still your mirror.

For example, the introvert attracts the extrovert, the weak attracts the strong, the giving attracts the taking. Such seemingly opposite partners attract each other so that they can learn from each other and bring their own extreme quality into balance.

In order to attract your opposite, you yourself have to be at the other end of the spectrum and so are unbalanced as far as that quality is concerned. Simply put, opposites attract in search of balance.

When none of your qualities are at either extreme of the spectrum, then you can no longer attract its opposite. Cayenne Kelly also writes it "All goes back to balance is the key to life"

More from Cayenne on how opposites balances relationships - If both are already well adjusted and balanced... Not perfect... but as balanced as needed to make a relationship work. If two people are level headed, thoughtful, honest, good communicators, and anything else that is beneficial to a relationship... then they have much in common that forms a "good team."

But if both are argumentative, disrespectful, deceitful, defensive, manipulators (pick a reality TV couple and insert here...you know the ones lol) then they have much in common that forms what I'd call a "bad team."

Sometimes we need that opposite to help show us another way to be that assists in our balance. Like the cliche couple of a man who appears weak and cowardly and a woman who is overbearing and aggressive.

Scene from The Best Man Holiday
It often plays out that he gets pushed too far and finally stands up for himself. Like the couple in the Best Man... the guy with the locs and the woman that had him around her finger.

Eventually... picked up some of her strength and stood up for himself. It all depends on where we are in regards to our characteristics and emotions.

Are we on one extreme or the other? Or closer to the middle?

My Reflections - This is an awesome topic of further exploration. Human survival and evolution constantly at work in this synergistic opposite polarity thingy. Good exploration of the subject.
