The Future of Black Magazines and Film

Linda Johnson-Rice of iconic Ebony Magazine is putting
Up the Historic Photo Archive for sale for $40 Million

Recently it was reported in the Chicago Tribune that Ebony Magazine, the iconic trailblazing black publication is looking to sell it's historic photo archive for 40 million dollars. Reportedly, there are 5 million pictures in it which to me cheapens the collection.  With that they are only getting roughly $8 a picture.

I think some of the bigger Black magazines should have gone into movies or documentaries. A guy like Michael Moore does 150 million dollars with a documentary.

Al Gore did the same thing with An Inconvenient Truth Over 150 million. Docs can be big business.

For instance most people don't read comics anymore but Marvel Comics is making billions a year with a lot of movies now. I think they do about 5 movies a year now.

I think Jet and Ebony have made hundreds of millions of dollars in the past, if not a billion or so, and should leverage their brands into movies and documentaries on famous issues or people. Look Oprah and her investors put in 40 million for Selma and it already grossed 132 million so far I read.

It might sound crazy but I think they need to explore other forms of media like this. Or they can just scale down and do all online and make money with a digital YouTube Channel and market their databases.

They are Johnson Publishing for Pete's Sake. LOL! Serious they were making over a 100 million dollars a year for decades. As long as I can remember.

They've made well over 1 billion dollars selling ads and subscriptions targeting Black consumers over the years. They have the assets as collateral to do a documentary. Doc's are cheap to create in comparison to feature films.
Michael Moore has done Over 150 Million dollars
doing documentaries

They should hire Spike or a established filmmaker to do docs and films toward a middle income Black audience. Well that's my little popcorn opinion any way. What do I know right? LOL! SMH

Magazines are a dying business is the bottomline. I hope these magazines can take the millions or billions made and channel it into new forms of media especially new media.

I remember when the Internet 1st came out a lot of these traditional media companies thought it was a joke.  You'd couldn't get many to buy a serious web site back in 1996 or so.

Now they are going out of business and Google, eBay, and Facebook are worth tens of billions of dollars each. It's a shame.

I do see what they were doing as almost a long documentary on Black life and that they could have leveraged that into the film or doc business. I don't know all the financial dynamics though.
I wish them the best.
